#George benson just the two of us skin#
When I see pictures of him, I can see it in his make-up, the way he was built the little freckles in his skin tone. Why do you think you seem to have developed such a great affinity with so many people in the UK? I don’t know where he got it from, but all of a sudden, he started saying, “There’s old ‘Bad’ Benson right there.” I was like, “Who’s that?” That’s right, Creed Taylor gave me that name. On which you were credited as George “Bad” Benson! I had one hit – Supership – and it was big at the discos, even in London. We did some bop tunes, R&B and jazz – we were very flexible. I had a tasty little quartet: electric bass, Earl Klugh on acoustic guitar, and a drummer.
I came over in the mid-70s and played at Ronnie’s. RC: Britain has always seemed to hold a special place in your heart. It’s still an enormous deal for him to have been performing back at a venue where he first appeared 45 years ago, notwithstanding the people he’s played with and the places he’s been. It is without a shred of over-exaggeration to state that he is one of the world’s greatest jazz guitarists, and he is talking to RC to promote his new album, Weekend In London, recorded live at Ronnie Scott’s in 2019. Of course, very much part of his legacy, but to consider him just for those would be akin to thinking Orson Welles only made TV adverts for sherry. To the casual listener, George Benson is all about those astoundingly suave pop/disco crossover records he made in the late 70s and early 80s.
